We have been called to be part of NEOM, a project in Saudi Arabia that defines itself as “an accelerator of the human process“.

It is the attempt to do something that has never been done before, at a time when the world has need for new ideas and new solutions to problems such as overpopulation and liveability of cities and the climate warming.

NEOM will introduce a new model of urban sustainability powered 100% by renewable energy, will adopt principles of environmental responsibility, which promote sustainable development and regenerative practices.

It is not just a question of building a smart city, a so-called “intelligent” city, but the first cognitive city, where top-notch technology is powered with data and artificial intelligence to interact in real time and non-stop with its population.

At SHELTER we are proud to be working on such an ambitious international project, a new one vision of what the future could be. We have the great pleasure of cooperating with RSK Environment for the environmental assessment aspects related to the developments of NEOM projects in the area.

Furthermore, through resources in Italy and on site, we follow the management and review of ESMP (Environment & Social management plans), ESIA, SEA and ENVID.

Thanks to projects like NEOM we can dream big, we also want to be part of the building a new model of sustainable life.

NEOM dreams big and we will try to make a contribution to the building of a new model of sustainable life.

At the end of 2020 we opened a new operational subsidiary in Brindisi. As per the Milan office, we work in respect of the environment with the aim of protecting it by undertaking both small daily actions and more significant projects.

Also for the Brindisi office, environmental, health and safety issues will be managed through the Integrated Management System, aspiring to continuous improvement for all those aspects that can be improved.

Our company has already defined the first actions to protect the environment:

  • ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT IDENTIFICATION of the local office: the Environmental Analysis document will be drawn up with the aim of identifying the environmental impacts related to the Brindisi subsidiary; this will make it possible to identify the aspects to intervene on in order to minimize the environmental impact.
  • ENVIRONMENTAL OBJECTIVES: each year we will set the goals to be achieved in order to improve his performance and consequently reduce the environmental impact;
  • ENERGY SAVING: we are already applying an operational procedure for energy saving in the office; in addition, a lighting project that includes LED lighting, is being evaluating;
  • REDUCTION OF WASTE QUANTITY: we buy only reusable coffee capsules to reduce the amount of waste produced.

Furthermore, we are proud our Brindisi subsidiary continues to support TAP for local enviromental actions and proud to have to have contributed to their dissemination.

SHELTER will be alongside Energy & Strategy, a research group made up of professors and researchers from the Management Engineering Department of the Politecnico di Milano, born with the aim of carrying out Research, Advisory and Training activities in the field of Energy, Sustainability and innovation for understanding the competitive and innovative dynamics in the energy supply chains.

Starting from 2012, Energy & Strategy has launched a new training activity, for the transfer of knowledge and skills developed in the field of energy and environmental sustainability from the academic world to companies and professionals, and Research, with an advisory activity to apply the know-how achieved with over a decade of studies and research in the field of technological innovation and strategic business management.

Some of the Observatories to which we have joined are part of this Research activity, namely:

  • Renewable Energy Report: The Green New Deal: a laboratory of ideas for the development of renewables in Italy (7th Edition)
  • Hydrogen Innovation Report – hydrogen and other green gases for the decarbonisation of the energy sector (1st Edition)
  • Circular Economy Report: Business models, technological solutions and potential of the circular economy in our country (2nd Edition)

For each of these Observatories, SHELTER will participate in the execution of the research programs with the Mapping of the current status (analysis of technological trends, market analysis and analysis of the legislative and regulatory framework), to understand the potential for diffusion of the technology market or of the model in question.

The works, lasting about five months, will conclude with a popular conference in which the results will be discussed in a round table, experiences will be shared and compared with experts in the sector and in which there will be space for a debate with interventions from the public.

Light pollution is a rapidly growing form of pollution (+ 7% per year, source ARPAV) that disturbs not only humans but also animals and plants.

Among the sources that can cause this type of pollution (public, street, private lights, etc.) there is also the lighting of construction sites.

On one of the construction sites we’ve worked on, we’ve faced the impact of artificial night lights on bees and their ability to produce honey.

Honey bees (Apis mellifera) are diurnal pollinators and their foraging activity depends on solar and celestial signals. Scientific studies show that changes in global horizontal irradiation and in the properties of light can damage their foraging activity.

Through industry experts, we have been called to analyze the potential effect of construction lights on bees and nocturnal insects. We therefore carried out specific monitoring to quantify the possible impact of lights on the activity of bees (in particular on activity at sunset) and nocturnal insects.

Our monitoring made it possible to propose mitigation proceedings such as the optimization of the positioning, orientation and timing of switching on the site lights.
